The Best School in Nigeria Achieves "Outstanding" Report in BSO rating by PENTA​

At The Regent School, we understand the diverse criteria parents and regulatory bodies prioritize when seeking the best British curriculum school in Nigeria and across Africa. We take immense pride in upholding these standards, evident through our educational accomplishments and the outcomes of our recent PENTA inspection.

We are extremely proud to announce that The Regent School has achieved the prestigious ‘OUTSTANDING’ status in the British Schools Overseas (BSO) DfE inspection, making it the only school in Nigeria to accomplish this remarkable feat. This recognition holds immense significance for our parents, students, staff, and the entire school community.

Out of about thirty-five (35) BSO schools in Africa, there are only five (5) in Nigeria and The Regent School is the only school in Nigeria to have received this outstanding rating.
This achievement places us at the forefront of educational excellence on the continent, setting a benchmark for other schools to aspire to.

Scrutinised by PENTA International, a Department for Education (DfE) BSO inspectorate, the inspection evaluates the quality of education similar to leading independent schools in the UK.

The inspection report reveals that The Regent School has been awarded an outstanding rating across all eight inspection criteria, which include students’ achievement, personal and social development, child protection and safeguarding, quality of education (curriculum, teaching, and assessments), school leadership as well as the quality of facilities and resources.

Headmaster's comment

The headmaster of the school, Mr. Joe Labuschagne, expressed delight at the inspection result. He was quoted as saying: “This year’s report was a great achievement as we were judged ‘OUTSTANDING’ in all areas. We are the first school in Nigeria to be judged as such and one of the few in Africa. There are currently five BSO Schools in Nigeria and thirty-five in Africa. This rating puts us ahead of other schools on the continent. The Regent School was first inspected by DfE through PENTA in 2017. A follow-up inspection should have occurred in 2020 but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, in 2023, we achieved ‘OUTSTANDING’! I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate our staff, parents, and pupils on this great – or let me say – AWESOME achievement.


While celebrating this momentous achievement, we recognise that the pursuit of excellence is an ongoing and collaborative endeavour. We value the active involvement of our parents, as their feedback is crucial to our continuous improvement. Earlier this year, we launched a school-wide survey to gather
direct and honest feedback on our performance. We sincerely appreciate the insights shared by our parent community, which helped guide our decision-making process at the highest level. It enabled us to enhance our academic standards, enrich our sports and music programmes and prioritise the safety and well-being of our children.
