Welcome to Upper Primary
Welcome to The Regent Primary School’s Upper Primary Department. At the Regent School, there is a strong sense of family and community, so we recognise that the personal development of pupils, spiritually, morally, socially and culturally as playing a significant part in their ability to contribute to community cohesion. We therefore aim to provide an education that provides students with opportunities to explore and develop their own values and beliefs, spiritual awareness, high standards of personal behaviour, a positive caring attitude towards other people, an understanding of their social and cultural traditions and an appreciation of the diversity and
richness of other cultures.
The academic and personal development and well-being of every child in our school is of paramount importance to us. This includes recognising the importance of providing a range of opportunities for our pupils to respond to, that supports their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development. Fundamental to our school’s ethos is the belief that by educating the ‘whole child’, we are enhancing their life chances. Academic excellence is important in everything we do in order to help our pupils reach their full potential. We are looking forward to welcoming you here at this lovely school. You will see further information about the wide range of subjects offered at The Regent School in the Curriculum.
In Year 4 (typically for children aged 8–9), the curriculum builds on earlier learning while encouraging greater independence and deeper understanding. The children develop stronger reading comprehension, expand their vocabulary, and consolidate writing more structurally.
Mastering multiplication tables up to 12 remains one of our foci in the year group. Social development and global awareness is also supported. The children are also expected to listen carefully, participate actively in class discussions, complete their work responsibly, and show positive behaviour such as respect, teamwork, and responsibility for their learning.
In Year 5, pupils (usually aged 9–10) are expected to become more independent learners and to deepen their understanding of all subjects taught. Some of the expectations include advanced reading comprehension, richer vocabulary, and structured writing. They tackle more complex topics, solve more reasoning and problem-solving. There is evidence of more research work and oral presentations. In addition, the children improve teamwork, responsibility, and critical thinking. By the end of Year 5, students are generally preparing for the increased academic challenge of Year 6, and they also apply to become school prefects.
In Year 6, students (usually aged 10–11) demonstrate strong independence, responsibility, and readiness for secondary school. This is the final year of Key Stage 2, so students focus on consolidating their knowledge and preparing for the exams into secondary schools. They are expected to read confidently, analyse texts, and produce well-structured writing in different genres and work with more advanced topics. Year 6 also encourage leadership as the students
take up prefect roles and projects. The students also embark on a community project tagged ‘Leavers’ Project’ where they raise money and support local school children with basic amenities and stationery.
The Upper Primary department prepares children to be more confident and independent for secondary education.
