The Regent Primary School Abuja Nigeria
Prince’s Mead School Winchester UK
We at The Regent Primary School love working with other schools. As one of our global links, The Regent Primary School Abuja works collaboratively with Prince’s Mead School Winchester UK. We share the same philosophy, to foster the love of learning in our children.
Prince’s Mead School has, as recently as 2016, hosted staff from The Regent Primary School on immersion trips. It is a daunting task to be expected to teach a lesson to unfamiliar children, in an unfamiliar school and in an unfamiliar country. The Regent staff who attended took this challenge upon themselves with a positive and professional approach. They also attended after school clubs which also broadened their exposure.
Overall, they had a tremendous experience, observing and teaching lessons. On their return to Abuja, these teachers demonstrated the impact of their UK experiences by weaving what they had seen right through their own practice; developing and improving as classroom practitioners.
Prince’s Mead School staff had the opportunity to hear all about the state of the art ICT facilities at Regent Primary and also to learn about our assessment practices. We found that there are lots of similarities between the two schools, even though we are on different continents and nearly 3000 miles apart!
On the final day of the trip, The Regent Primary School staff presented a very colourful, engaging and vibrant assembly to the children, staff, parents and governors of the school. The Regent staff were dressed representing different parts of Nigeria. They were also interviewed by a local journalist about their experience.
The presentation began with an introduction about the Regent School showing different classes, the fields and building. It was followed by presenting different buildings in Abuja, Traditional Attire, Festivals and Food. There was a lovely Nigerian display table with different artefacts and also a ‘Yam’!
The staff, children and parents enjoyed the assembly and were equally engaged. Gifts were exchanged at the end. The parents came to personally thank The Regent Primary School teachers.
We are grateful to the generosity and open door approach of Prince’s Mead school, especially the Headmistress for giving up her time to observe and mentor our teachers. We look forward to further collaboration.
